I served 16 years at sea from deck cadet to master, trading worldwide in dry cargo vessels, from coasters and to general cargo vessels up to handymax bulk carriers. I have a great deal of experience of bulk, neo-bulk and breakbulk cargoes, container liner service (on a bulk carrier!) and heavy lift & project cargoes.
I came ashore to work for a leading international marine law firm for next 15 years. I spent periods in London, Guildford and Singapore. I handled a broad range of wet and dry cases but my primary role was marine investigator & consultant.

I became an independent investigator and consultant at the end of 2004. This allowed me to take on expert witness work in addition to my casualty and consultancy work.

I obtained my UK Class 1 (Master Mariner) Certificate of Competency in 1988. Since becoming an independent consultant I have continued to update my marine and investigative professional knowledge. In 2016 I obtained BTEC7 Advanced Professional Certificate in Investigative Practice (APCIP).
